You Know You’re A Graphic Designer When… (Version 1.5 [Greek letter])

In Funny on September 30, 2007 at 9:33:00 pm

Never uses type larger than 10 points or a point size that people can actually read
You’ve almost rear-ended the car in front of you because you were analyzing a font on a billboard.
You get pissed when a free Photoshop brush you download is less than 1000px in size.
You can use keyboard shortcuts at light speed, blindfolded, but you can’t type a paragraph of text without staring at the keyboard.
You consider meals interruptions.
You’ve learned your lesson and stopped using the word “final” in any file name when saving.
You clean your keyboard more often than you wash your car.
You’ve intentionally given up trying to explain your projects to non-designers.
You see CMYK and RGB like Neo sees the Matrix.
You’d rather organize your desktop than your sock drawer.
When you look at Album art all you see are grunge Photoshop Brushes. (Then you see the album art a couple minutes later)
You’ve actually $paid for a font.
You’ve totally slaughtered a great design concept because the client thinks he/she knows best. (everyone thinks they are a designer)
You’ve kept a ragged concert ticket just so you could scan it.
You bookmark a resource more often than you have a fun night out on the town.
You can’t go to a restaurant without secretly critiquing the menu design.
You have an amazingly huge font collection, and an amazingly short temper.
If you had a penny for every mouse click, you would have been a trillionaire 3 years ago.

Just found those at The HowDesign Forums. Well, one of the links in that thread points to one of my blog posts, so I thought I’d link to it. Why not?

Facebook Apps Rant

In Rant on September 26, 2007 at 8:37:59 pm

I’d like to take a moment out of your day to complain. That’s a bad start, but whatever.

I officially hate 99% of all new Facebook apps. I don’t mind the standard ones, because they are designed to serve an actual, meaningful purpose (Photos, Notes, etc). But “Vampire”, “Where I’ve Been”, and “lolzcats” apps don’t make any sense. Here are 2 images to prove the point:

Massive Facebook profile. My Facebook Profile

On the left is a Facebook profile with a large amount of apps. No, make that a collosal amount of apps. No, bigger than collosal. Anyways… on the right is my Facebook profile. I’ve gone through and attempted to blur out any and all identifying type stuff. But I’m not sure if I got it all.

I took these screenshots using “Paparazzi”, an application for Macs that will take a screenshot of an entire webpage. The one on the left is huge. I’ve never seen a profile bigger than that. I know that in Firefox, I can have a script to hide all of those unwanted apps. But I use Safari. And there are a few apps that I don’t mind. On my actual profile page, I currently have the following apps (excluding the standard Facebook ones):
– My Box – Formerly HTML box, this provides my profile with a small button linking to my blog.
– Twitter – An unobtrusive app to let people know what I’m up to. I may get rid of it, however.
– Honesty Box – I love hearing what rude things people have to say about me. Or nice things that, for whatever reason, they can’t say to my face. It’s always an interesting app, and it’s quite small.

That’s it! 3 measly apps, in addition to the standard Facebook ones (Notes, Posted Items, Photos, Videos, Groups, The Wall and Information). And, because I’m lazy (as you can see by the inaccurate blurring on the left profile example), I can’t be bothered to list all of the apps that this other person has. But it’s a LOT.

Do you want to see the full pages? Alright… here they are.

New, New and More New!

In House MD, Jeans, Music, Personal, Random, Top Gear, TV on September 25, 2007 at 7:52:22 pm

Well, it makes me happy. Alright… I got new jeans today. They’re David Bitton “Buffalo” “Game” jeans in a dark wash. I love them. $93 or so, which isn’t bad considering that they actually had my size. See… I’m really tall… and freaky skinny. So finding jeans is usually a hard thing to do. It ranks right up there with making nuclear fission an easy energy source. Anyways… I bought them from Hot Gossip on 17th avenue (in Calgary). It’s a great place. It’s full of really great jeans (7s, R&Rs, True Religions, Diesels and of course, Buffalos). They’ve got a lot of sizes, as well. Check them out. They’re past the Melrose Café, and there’s a little sign saying “Hot Gossip Upstairs” just above a door. It’s really simple, but really good.

My new jeans, in a bad photo.

I got the new Weakerthans album today. I will provide a track-by-track breakdown of it in the near future. I think. One word summary: f*ckingamazing. I had to make that one word. As per the rules.

New Weakerthans CD

And the new season of House is premiering in 2 hours and 9 minutes. I can’t wait!

By the way: new season of Top Gear is on on Oct. 7th.

“Chrysanthemums of White” – New Project

In High School, Projects on September 20, 2007 at 10:18:05 pm

I’m working on a brand new movie project which I’m super excited about. It’s called “Chrysanthemums of White”. It’ll probably be a 15 minute long short film by the time it’s done. The logo for it is up top. Here’s a plot synopsis:

Harley Lindsay is a young man who is living a dead-end kind of life. He has a terrible job working at a supermarket, his girlfriend broke up with him, and he can’t afford to pay rent, let alone to eat, go to college, or buy a car. He is having such a bad month that he attempts to kill himself by jumping from a building. He survives the fall, and is in hospital in critical condition. While there, he hallucinates several times. His doctors tell him that it’s nothing, and is just a reaction to the painkillers he is on. But Harley takes his own meaning from the hallucinations, and it becomes a life-altering experience.

I’ve already spoken to a few actors whom I’d be interested in working with for the film. It will be extremely low budget, and will be shot from October until December on certain days of the week (yet to be decided). I am planning on not just using this for my school project, but actually entering it in film competitions and the like. If I like it.

I’ll keep you posted. I’m really excited about this.

Random Observation

In Random on September 18, 2007 at 10:53:27 am

Hey! I just figured out that, if I leave my MacBook Pro’s AC power brick on a tablet, my mouse cursor will jump around all over my screen. WEIRD!
